lynxcat ,I know the cities tags are federal, what our state agency is doing is recommending to the USFWS to allow states to have control and forego the need to have cities tags and allow states to implament there own tagging system and managment of bobcats.

I don't know about bobcats but you can trap out lynx. Their population is linked to that of the snowshoe hare. When the hares crash the lynx crash about 3 years later. If the cats are overtrapped during the crash there is no seed left to rebuild the population. Overtrapping them during the crash is easy because they wander more searching for food and because there are fewer kittens.

Actually CITES tags are an international issue because international trade in bobcats, Canada lynx, marten, river otter and wolves is monitored by CITES (Convention In Trade Of Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna).
Bobcats are included because the Mexican bobcats are listed as endangered, and are a look alike. Until the MX bobcat is delisted under CITES by a majority vote of the 169 nations that are parties to the treaty we'll be tagging cats.
Personally I think theres more value in the data collection and tagging of cats than not because we have a hell of a database to defend the taking of bobcats. We used this data successfully in 1993 to defeat legislation that would have eliminated our cat seasons.

We had a big lawsuit in NV in 1985. The anti's brought in all the big guns from back East, Dick Randall etc.
The judge admitted to having prejudice towards the anti's but ruled in our favor due to the data.
We use our data every year.
For those of you whose states don't cut the teeth and collect good data you should figure out how to get them to start.
In my opinion it is what will stand you up when the anti's come calling.

I believe the whole uppity Euro based title is Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
CITES is a great circus spectacle to behold in person. ;D
