Agree with Dukie....if he digs, I feel my chances are better than if if ignores me all together.
Love the Severing story, especially the "last word" by Ed....hopefully, he doesnt determine a trapper's intellegence by the way they look LOL
Never really 100% sure I catch the culprit when after a true digger, as I am rarely in one spot for more than one week.
Have come to realize now that many of my digger fox and coyotes over the years were NOT diggers due to "smarts" or being wise.....also realize now that many of my smart, digger fox and coyotes were really coons, fox pups, etc.
One time, had a digger that hit a double set every day for about 4 days...both traps had caught before, and I should have put a third clean set in....
Rather, I saw where he was standing behind the one set to dig it out....so I blended in a 1.75 on the back side (easier to blend a small trap) to see what would happen.
The next day, we had a light skiff of new snow, and as I drove to the sets, I could see that the set with the second trap blended had a coyote in it, and he was tied up by two feet in two traps.
But, he had successfully dug up the other set first, and then walked over to the set that took him, the scene spelled out for me perfectly in the snow.
It was one of the rare times when I knew for certain, that day, that moment, that I had the villain.
Ironically, he had mange bad enough that he didn't even make it to the back of the truck.....kinda spoiled the victory a bit.
