I have a #1 Duke CS and it has a four inch jaw spread, could I use it on foxes or is it too small? What should I use it on?

It's a bit small, use on Mink and rats.

Definetly a tad small...I REALLY like the 1 1/2 Montgomery round AND square jaw'd traps....On farmland where my "primary" target is fox...I ALWAYS use these smaller traps...AND catch a fair amount of coyotes to boot...NEVER a problem...tho when I get in an area with a higher concentration of coyotes to fox..I DO step up on the trap size...just my prefference. later lynx

trouble is- most young trappers don't have access to monty 1.5s...
any good 1.5 coil is pretty much a perfect fox trap. Use the Duke and others with confidence.

The majority of my fox traps are 1.5's and serve just fine but I am slowly converting to bigger traps for a couple of reasons...I haven't proven it yet but I believe that my miss ratio % during the late season (Snow and frozen weather) is less with the bigger steel than the smaller traps...

i have to say my favorite is a 1.75 round jaw...and i stress round jaw...it has more kill area(bigger pan) and will hole the ocasional yote..will stand alot of abuse and will fire better in frozen conditions than the 1.5..i think the square jawed traps might get a little high on the leg for fox and might have more leg breakage with the sq jawed traps....

I like laminated offset #1.75 or #2 RJ fall dirt set and #2 and #3 Bridger in the winter.

What should I use the #1's on?

I run 1.75 and #2s, mainly because of bobcats and chance of coyote...w

I'm tooling over to # 2 Bridger offsets because I have mainly red fox, but coyotes are DEFINATELY here.
not too many grays...some, but not huge numbers.

strictly red fox a no 1 will hold them all easy, but if you bump up to a 1 and 1/2 you won`t have to be as exact on placement and just easier to work with and overall better results. A no 2 is a little too much but servicable, probably better than a #1 but not a 1 and 1/2. Throw coyotes into the picture and the whole world is whacked as to trap sizes etc.. As a kid I caught tons of red fox in no 1 victor longsprings as that was all I had. Now I am 100% 1 and 1/2 softcatch. As your skills increase you will be able to make almost any trap work for you but bet you settle on a 1 and 1/2 as most fox trappers do ,for a variety of reasons.

I use mostly 1.75 sized traps and a few #2s and see no real difference in paw damage with them than with a 1.5...gray fox included. Next season I will be using more Bridger #2s than anything.
I really don't see the benefit of using a 1.5 sized trap other than price.
The presence of coyotes made me quit using 1.5s for fox, but if coyotes disappeared from this planet, I would not go back to 1.5s. I just feel a bigger trap puts the odds a bit more in my favor.
The 1.5 coil is a dying breed. The geographical expansion of the coyote and the raccoon BMP will slowly kill it.

I agree CD, if there was just fox around, I would go back to the 1.5 dogless, but having said that, we now have coyotes and almost all of my traps are #2 and #3 for canines, I caught a few in the number 3s and didn't notice that much difference with damage. Heck, I even caught my first domestic dog this year, a little Jack Russell in a #3 Montana, he did have a cut in the skin, but no broken bones. After his leg got the feeling back, I followed him home in the truck, he was moving at a pretty good clip too, the farmer told me, he was no worse for the wear, but didn't think he was smart enough not to get back in a trap next season LOL. I have not seen where the square jaw caused broken bones, in fact I haven't seen many broken bones period in almost 40 years. Because I am trapping areas that hold both fox and yotes, I do bury the Montanas a little deeper than the #2 Dogless Montgomery's

well i can tell you fellas that the 1.75 and 2s I use are laminated but are real rough on grays, but i have no choice because im not gonna lose bobcats which happens quite a bit when using 1.5s, the cats that get caught are there, but many dont even get caught, just a sprung trap because of the big paw...that is why i like the bigger traps...I use to use 1.5s exclusively trapping and had no problems catching and holding fox, but learned real quick about the cats and switched, plus as mentioned above the larger traps give me a slight advantage over the 1.5 even on fox.....

Is there such a trap that is easy on greys, but will hold every coyote that comes along? I'd like to sell my greys to the taxidermy market this year, but I'm just as likely(if not more so) to catch a coyote when setting for the foxes. Too much to expect from one trap? Adam

CoonDuke made a interesting point regarding #1 1/2 sized trap being a trap that might be on its way out....damn coyotes! Noone has mentioned 1.65 Bridger on fox...I find that interesting also...with the number of #1 1/2 Monty rjs being limited I would figure this 1.65 would be the best next option.

The 1.5s will still be used extensively for mink, muskrat, as for the 1.65, why not just got 1.75 Dukes, I do not care for the 1.65 Bridger.
