Its about as simple a set as you can get. I've tried many other styles and versions- and keep going back to the old basic set. I mark out a triangle with sides about 15 inches and base about 12 inches. I then remove all dirt to a depth of 4 inches or so. The hole is made just under the surface at the "point" and is 100% horizontal- no vertical angle at all. This is extremely important in my mind. I like the hole at least 8 inches deep- the top of the hole is 1/4 of an inch or less below the surface of the undisturbed dirt. Trap goes in either corner tight to 2 sides- I use right corner- out of habit nothing more. Guides are then placed in other corner, in front of trap. A self guided set if there ever was one. I've gotten many letters after publishing this set to the tune of "thanks for helping me take my first coyotes..." In fact- Lori only wanted to use THIS set last fall because of her success rate with it. Took a lot to convince her that she could learn to make flat sets just as easily. heres the pics... coyotesrus.proboards35.com/index.cgi?board=land&action=display&thread=1079454093

I use a D handled winkler for my set I use alot of stepdown type sets. I usually also dig the hole with it but sometimes I punch in a mouse hole with a 1/2" stake.
