Having a coyote stand on the backing and digging or way off to the side is not a common occurrance. Couple three times per year. Most of the time, when I can tell, it doesn't look like the coyote spent much time digging before it was caught. Hard call because once one gets in a trap, in my sandy soil, it plows the ground several inches deep inside the catch circle. My "guess" is the coyote notices my set, walks up and probably in about 2 seconds steps on the trap pan. The exception to the rule is when the darned thing walks all over the set, poops, pees, rolls and steps everywhere but on the trap pan. Gotta love 'em.
