The colder weather is definite time to use up out of hole. And earlier in year too with a little common sense. I do alot of the wiping a little lure above hole on backing and I do believe at times it makes a difference. Helps disperse the smell a little and often that little bit is all that is needed. In heavy brush and such and big country I do at times also use an LDC above set area and have more than 1 set ready for action when doing this. Wind direction can play a very important role in wether a set connects or not. Trap in the snow and it tells you a good story. have seen where canines have passed within a few yards of sets with the wind blowing wrong.

So Kiss when you went on about cats being a "whole nother ball game",............I kinda thought you might mention the rubbing responce one can get with castor based lures say 16 in. off the ground? lol Sure worked dandy for me when I trapped cats,...........if you miss them the first pass they often turn around and take a second pass.

BK , have not gave that set enough yet , but am going to start using it as a second set at locations just for the reasons you stated. Can see the benefit of a totally different type set as a backup for cats. But actually put a decent amount of lure on brush backing when cat trapping and not so much with canines. Like others try scents on their dogs I have been playing with my 3 cats and scents. a couple lures have a real good reaction from the kitties , will see what their wild cousins think. Now if I can just talk my wife into that bobcat kitten as a pet I may have a real edge in selecting lures.

kiss- my cat has smelled and rolled in just about everything I bring into the house or yard- but 1 thing provokes the most attraction by far- and that is mink-
If I set my gloves down after handling mink- she is rolling on them in a second.

**The colder weather is definite time to use up out of hole.**
Yep.
I have nothing other than experience for my opinion, but where coyotes dont seem to rove as much during the heavy snows, its *seems* they are more willing to go some out of their way for chow.Granted, travel is harder in the snow, but food is more scarce as well........ah well, mine is not to reason why, mine is but to make them die.
During my regular coyote trapping it is rare I'll place lure higher than the backing(urine)but I started to see a little benefit to the practice while trapping cats and fisher......even had a yote cross a creek, pretty cool.
High lure definately has its place, but I would hypothesize this;high lure aint gonna *lower* your fur check.
