I have bragged on steve craig as the top snare man in the world. He taught me this. Take a jar of unscented vasoline and with bare hand rub thin coat of vaseline over the cable one end to the other and the lock. Freezing rain will not stick and runs off. voila- snares WILL work in freezing rain. Stef had posted under how do easterners do it. Well, merry xmas stef and others, now you know a trick never in print anywhere and you learned it on the real trappers site and not the blabbers site.

p.s. now you will no doubt see this in some boneheads book or video next year, but you knew a year in advance and you knew where it really came from.

Bob, wax work pretty well too you know and found it better than vaseline. I knew that messy tricks for years Bob... Sorry The new trend is.... I heard that O'Gorman sells an Odorless Silicone spray for freeze proofing CamLock I believe. I don't know if you can spray the cable with that? Stef

I don`t know about wax or spray. Steve taught me that trick over 25 years ago. The vaseline can be picked up dirt cheap at 3 a.m. at any all night gas station. I mean , not like a guy expects that freezing rain till it is happening. I never had a problem with that vaseline being sticky if you rub it on thin.

Mineral oil will do the same thing and that has been in print. After I boil my snares in baking soda I just dip them in the Mineral oil and stash them in zip lock bags. It's even easier to work with since it's not as sticky. The few times I fooled with vasiline it slows the speed of the snare down when toying with them in very cold conditions. When I did this I heated the vasiline up and dipped my snares. I never did put that in print

well, folks were lamenting snares not working in freezing rain weather , and no one else sure as heck posted it. Since everyone knows it anyway guess I`ll keep my piehole shut.

well, I haven`t been too succesful at keeping it shut in the past. My wife says, "well geese, you don`t have to tell everything you know, you know". I`m winding down now, no reason to hold back anything. Might be gone someday and like to pass on what little I have gleaned over the years, only fair, I mean like how did I learn what I know?, mostly someone told me and a tiny tad I learned the hard way. Just thought maybe everyone knew all that stuff already and maybe I was rambling.

Not everyone knew, Bob ... I for one just learned it (from da' Energizer Bunny Hisself!). I've got some 40+ seasons at this game, and virtually all that I know came from someone else ... Thanks for sharing, and Happy Holidays to you and yours! "Ridge"

Keep on Keeping on Bob. A lot of us are learning valuable things from your posts. Just be aware that there will always be smartasses and those motivated by jealousy to cut you down. I have never understood the part of human nature that causes some people to have to knock down the guy that worked hard to get to the top, instead they should be congratulating him and be thankful when he wants to give away for free, what took him years to learn. Keep it up Bob, "most" of us have your back.

This is what happens when one posts some info they have. There are many great trappers here in the US does that mean that one is the bible over the other. NO My post was not to attack anyone, but when one joins a new forum and speaks there mind they get gangbanged. Of course they do because this is the way BBS's work. If I was to just pattronize everyone and joined the club then I would be accepted.
Bob posted about the Blabbers site which I don't know about. Maybe I am missing something here and not in the click here yet. I was taught that trick from George Good many years ago he never did get around to writting that book he talked about. George also used vasiline but favored mineral oil. To each his own.
So Bob if I offended you I apolagize. But remember this is the internet anything goes "It's a small world now, but I wouldn't want to paint it"
MarkyMark- We're a little protective here, but don't worry, its sounds like you will fit right in. All opinions are welcome- its just after seeing the self destructive road others have followed elsewhere...we all try extra hard to repsect each other. No harm, no foul.

marky, I`m not offended at all. No big deal. Guys, I`m chilled. everything is cool, lets drop it. This is the best site going, lets not let it get like the other one. Beav, got about 2 dozen tree customers right now, gotta run. You tell them about the rr tracks. They won`t believe it till they try it. Hint, look at the rr tracks after a frost guys and it will blow your mind. gotta go.

Thanks for setting the record straight Marky, just remember, there are a lot of different levels of experience here, what you know someone else may not. This board is committed to helping everyone, we don't look down at newbies or tear down the pros. If you have something to add, by all means, post it, you would be amazed at the little tidbits that may mean nothing to you, that some other trapper may cherish for learning.
