Was pretty interesting reading the "dirt hole" post. It left me curious as to which position you all put the dog on the trap when bedding it? How big a difference do you think dog position makes in hit/ miss? Also, if using a dogless trap like the Montana, how do you orient the trap then?

On my dogged traps the dog will be at 6 o'clock. less dog damage as for the Montana's I am not sure how I am going to orient them ;D probaly just throw them in the bed and cover

I don't think it really matters- I hear theroys that make each position logical. Out of habit, I put the dog at 6 o'clock.

I am inclined to agree with Steve, I always set mine ( the traps that have dogs ) at 10:00 or 2:00 and I thought I had a logical reason, but in talking to a lot of other trappers, their positioning makes a lot of sense too, so I am thinking, whatever you get used to and are succesful with, is fine. I do know this, if I try to change the position to something other than what I have been using, it takes more time.

I like the dog at 12 o'clock on both hole and flat sets...reading O'Gorman's book he puts the dog or trigger on dogless traps at 3 o'clock on hole sets and 12 at flat sets.

I place the dog and the springs on a longspring at 12 oclock. On a dogless trap I place the ear that holds the jaw at 3 oclock. I was taught this way and always have done it.

Couldn't a better question be...Where is the best/(easiest) place to "defend" a dog?
You're correct in that it won't matter "IF" a critter dosn't step on it, and we know that we are better served if we protect the dog...With this in mind, I prefer to have the dog somewhat toward the back, (between 10 and 2 oclock) so that I can protect the dog and NOT cause my catch to "Step-over" my protection... Kinda hard to explain so I hope I got the message across (even if you disagree)

wouldn't 10-2 be the front of the set?

wouldn't 10-2 be the front of the set? You say tomato...lol When I'm kneeling down in front of the set looking at the hole, "the trap is a clock" 10-2 is at the top of the trap furthest from my knee's and closest to the hole... That's why I prefer the 2 oclock position...Off to the side in the back-right side of the trap... 10 would be thge back-left side of the trap... Another way to explain it would be the eyes on this smiley face They roll from 6 oclock, past 3 and on up to 12 as I'm kneeling over the trap...lol

I prefer to have the dog somewhat toward the back, (between 10 and 2 oclock) Now- how is 10- 2 oclock toward the back?- if you are looking at the set and noon is at your backing. To me- the backing is the front of the set and where you knee or stand to make the set "the back"- at least thats how I have always looked at it. You people east of the Mississippi and your big city ways...

Steve, easy now, Its not their fault that they can't read a clock or it's that they look at the clock backwards I still agree with Steve, 6 o'clock would be best for dog protection. that puts the dog right behind the paw and the Ki-yute can't get at it very easily But the BEST dog protection is to use Dogless Traps no dogs to get damanged. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

If you kneeled looking at the hole, facing it, I set with the dog at 5 o:clock and the trap off set just a bit on that side.
Don't know why or that it makes a diference but always liked the loose jaw toward the approaching animal.

I can't tell time. Just ask my wife!
!0 o'clock, two, 3:15 I don't know? I don't care. Mostly I set MB's, and they ain't got a dog, and when I do set traps like a bridger or what not, I don't pay any attention to the dog location. I'll point it somewhere's toward the bait, but doubt it matters all that much.
I'm much more interested in WHERE I'm placing the trap, and that it's bedded solid than I am putting a compass on my dogs.

Lets see here I live east of the Mighty Mississippi so how do I say this, I point my dog at the attractor or at 12:00 however you want to say it. I like the Yote or fox to step over the jaws not inbetwen them, I know this isn't always the case but its what I shoot for and works well for me. I feel with the dog at 12:00 and some subtle guides right on top or behind it the Yote will step right up rather than have to step over my dog guide if the dog was at say 6:00, I'm just trying to make an easy place for him to place his foot. I like to get him on the pan on the first step into the pattern I feel this really increases my catch ratio.....B..........B.....

LOL...Ok Ohio it is, fair enough...But last time I checked, Ohio was east of the Mississippi as well... ;D I think it's cool that you join so many trapping organizations... You can join MMTA (Maineman Trappers Association) for $2500 annually, and I won't even bother you with a monthly magazine... ;D

I seriously thought it was the Possum Trappers Assoc;cuz you say you are a grinner skinner.
Edge
Edges Trapping Association is cheaper than Mainemans;say 2300$/year,and I will recycle the mags you already get.
Better yet, join MaineEdge Assoc for an even 5 grand;we will still take your old mags.
