Under "ideal" situations...probably not. BUT under less than ideal situations...ABSOLUTLY!!! Just common sense...freezing conditions, muddy, etc....a STRONGER trap WILL come up faster...matter of physics. And YES I do NOT trap under ideal conditions...and YES a 4 coiled trap does/will increase my catch. latersssssss lynx

Does a 4 coiled trap reduce the loss, over a properly designed 2 coil trap? When dealing with coyotes the answer is a big yes! Yes depends on a few things first, what kind of conditions are you trapping in? 2nd what trap check law do you have? The size and temperment of the coyote in your area. Are you staking or dragging the coyotes? How much chain do you run? In my country heavy gumbo clay, add a rain and a 2 coiled trap isn't going to perform on coyotes very well at all, to slow and add in the fact of a hard working coyote with that "grease" on it's paw and you begging for pull outs and poor catches. Add a 48-72 trap check law and short chain that gets clogged up with this cement like mixture and you have a bad deal for coyotes. The sterling mj600 and coyote cuff #33 are my idea of a coyote trap: proper jaw size, good thick wide jaws, nice offset and the power needed to hold coyote on 16"+ of chain. Add on 6ft-8ft of chain and a drag and use 2 coil versus 4 coiled traps for coyotes and see what works better, you will have less empty traps with the 4 coiled version. The thing to me being a proper coyote trap, it has to have around a 6" jaw spread, have nice thick wide jaws with a good offset, good chain, great swivels and be able to take coyote abuse! A 4 coiled trap has great balance, and disperus the energy equally over the whole trap design, and what alot of people don't think about there going to fight a trap that weighs more less than one they can beat and bang around with ease. As Slim Peterson states 4 coil all traps bigger than a #2, for best results. I have always stated use the best equipment possible and you can never go wrong! Best being relative to your situation and likes and dislikes, after all it is trapping ;D

good thoughtful post 35- you summed up about right.... on the other hand (of course LOL) in the type of country I trap in- good loam soil, fall conditions, 24 hour check- add in ful "pan guiding" and short chains- and 2 coils work just fine. On smaller traps. but- in no way or form, despite accusations by those misinformed, do I advocate 2 coiled, smaller traps as the ultimate coyote trap. I look forward to seeing the differences in using my Montanas vs the 1.75s regarding larger jaw size..but since I don't trap yotes in any type of quantity in bitter cold (and in fact then the 1.75s work just fine) or snow, mud, etc- I'll still be using them 2 coiled. This year, I'll be able to use snares when it gets cold and snow.....

If I start getting pull outs Frank, I will consider it, I haven't till this point, so I don't see the need here. You may need it up in the great white north, and I may too if I get back to NH ( working on it ) I never used them before up there though, and did not have a problem. I do not believe in offsets or laminations either, and have never seen the need for them, maybe I am more set in my ways than I thought ;D

I have a buddy that lives there, he moved out from NH back in the early 90s. I think he works for a mine reclamation company. I also think he is a " cooker " on the weekends ;D His brother is also a big game guide in northern ID.

No DJ, its not a Canadian thing. Like Frank said.. its a smart thing ;D
On the other hand, in 2007 only traps so far that will be allowed to use will be the Bridger #3 and Belisle foot snare and YES... the Bridger needs to be four coils to be legal here in Canada.
Must be a reason...LoL
So I can say, yes it will be a Canadian thing but only in 2007!

To my knowledge he doesn't, or didn't trap, he does fish and hunt. Not sure if that was the company name or not, but they go all over the mid west. Name is Wes Tanner. Good guy, look him up, he might be able to get you permissions on some of those reclaimed mine sites, if you need it.
