those of you that are K-9 trappers, heres a little scenerio, your putting in a flat set and see a pile of scat, do you move it close to the set or do you leave it where it is??? Scenerio #2, your just put in a post set and are on the way to another location that is only a few hundred yards away and you spot some scat on the ground, do you pick it up and walk back to the set you just made or do you punch in a set where the scat is??? Time for bed, have to work tomorrow I'll check for replies after work ;D woody

I routinely pick up scat and use it at the next I make.

OK! but wasn't that scat put there for a reason??? by the animal that deposited. I have read that a fox or coyote will use scat like a scent post or a terroritoral marker. Supposedly they just don't go dumping scat everywhere and anywhere. I know my dogs spend alot of time looking for that special spot to go my female lab urinates in one or two places and does the scat thing in a couple of other places. my male lab, urinates everywhere and has a couple of places that he does the scat thing. makes it nice knowing where them places are when mowing the yard ;D now back to the question. does moving it help or does it matter?

I collect scat as well, move it around to where i want it. Scat could have been deposited at a site for a reason and there is nothing that says you can't put in another set right there, but, introduce some scat to a new area and I believe the interset level in better.

Hmmmmnnn...............
Good question.
I go both ways- I use scat at sets for a period and then I think its not worth the bother.
I haven't decided if it makes a difference in successor not. My gut reaction is, no- is it doesn't increase my catch much- but it doesn't hurt it either.
I used to collect scat and use it at new sets. Still do a very little bit.
My usual method now is to leave it lay. If I come into an area, and make a fresh set- if I find scat nearby, it just reaffirms that it is a good location. I MIGHT pick it up and use it as a jaw guard, I might not. More often than not, since found scat more than a day or 2 old is dry, etc- I just leave it lay.
On a remake, I used to pick up the scat and save it- but very seldom do unless I want to use it on a specific set later. I'll leave it scattered around the circle- at the most using a large piece as a jaw guard at that set- and perhaps if another set is close by, put a piece there.
All in all- I guess I feel its of marginal use MOST of the time, and its not worth much time or effort to go out of my way to collect it and use it.
Here is a Wileyism- Take it for what you will...."For the most part, if you find coyote scat in an area, it means that the coyote feels secure there"

Here is a Wileyism- Take it for what you will...."For the most part, if you find coyote scat in an area, it means that the coyote feels secure there" I would buy that, but as I experienced last year, they also mark with it, no way that female fox could have felt comfortable around the traps I was setting, ...or maybe she was, ....but as I had said, she took to flipping the traps over and taking a dump on them. I am glad she is out of the way.

Ill pick them up, but will use it in other locations on different coyotes, or after a catch has been made.

Another E-man thought,
Take 1 dropping, dip it in gland lure and use it for your attractor. And yes I have tryed it and it works.

I don't pick up scat. But I do gut and remove the lower intestine with the scat enclosed from cats fox and coyotes. I just freeze and use as needed. I use them as a atractor and as I foot guide at the set.

I don't go out of my way to pick them up but if I have them at the catch circle, I use them as guides on the remake...I know the Leggetts would throw them out of the circle and while I respect both of these men I never understood the logic in this...
Has anyone ever had a conversation with Ron to find out WHY they tossed the scat out of the circle??? Just curious...

Mm, I haven't talked with Ron, but I would bet it has something to do with the old theory that the catch circle has to be free of blood and feces for the K-9's to work the reset. I know when I first started trapping in the early 80's that's what i was told buy trappers from that era and that's what I want by until now as I learn differently. If you remember back in the 70's and 80's, it as a sin to use bare hands to make a set and you had to spray the set with urine all the time. I used gloves and did everything to the book and never caught one K-9, other then a small red in a dead furrow out in the field that they were running and in the snow I could see where it was coming out, so I put in a Monty 1.5 stock and just covered it with grass, after about 3 days I started to get that, Yeah this is going to work thoughts. I rember the catch to this day, it was on New Years Eve, We had about 2 inches of rain and with the 3 inches of snow on the ground that furrow filled up. I walked through mud and muck to check that set and when I got there, I seen an orange cat floating in the water, I got in the furrow to remove the cat and it was a small red fox instead. I still have the pelt in a box somewhere. I know the the last time i seen it the hair was slipping bad. I never did get it tanned like i wanted. Now back to what i was saying about gloves and using urine. I made my sets last season with barehands and didn't use urine, and caught 2 yotes. not bad for a beginner. when I used urine all I got was deer. I think a lot of the older trappers still goes by the old theories and concepts. ( I don't want to offend anyone thats in this catogory) but this is how I feel ;D woody

Ron and Pete probably threw out the scat so they wouldn't kneel in it when re making the set LOL

WHO YOU CALLING OLD WILLIS??? ;D
I have also thrown out a lot of the old theory's, I set barehanded, unless it's real cold, but I still use a lot of urine at the set, and mist the entire area, after I stand up to leave.

I would use the poop if it was close, but would not walk back a couple hundred yards to do so....
I pick them up when I am scouting and place them in ziplocks and freeze them....I use them as needed, but am always happy to use a local freebie if it is handy...
