FOX! Kind of like a Red Fox but more aggressive, and is the most colorful critter we can trap ;D Oh yea, the only K-9 that can climb a tree What did you think I was talking about? I know better then to talk about hair color here with all the older gentlemen that hang out here, ;D Oh wait, my hairs turning gray also, I think its this site, spending to much time here ;D woody

Stef, I hope I didn't offend ya, I keep forgetting that different areas has different critters. I am just fortunit enough to have all three K-9's that we can trap. I just picked up 7 woodlots that should hold some grays and thought I would seek advice. I plan on using you lures only this season so Hopefully I will have some pics to send to ya during the season. ;D If I keep getting area's to trap I will need to get more of you lure's woody

No you did not offend me Was just joking. Never see a grey in all my life. Some guys catch some sometimes in Southern Quebec but only close to the Champlain lake area and its rare. They are protected here! Stef

I catch greys in the woods, log roads, brushy areas and swampy land. The same lures and baits that take reds or coyotes work for me on greys.

Good advice Frank, log roads and swamps, those would be my first choices.

I usually catch 2-6 grays a year (this year is exception, no grays) and have only caughht 1 or 2 in canine sets. The rest all come from coon sets set into the woods.
Most greys come from areas with rocky ridges-
If I really tried hard- and trapped closer to the rocks- I could probably take a few more grays every year-
I agree- they are pretty. Some have so much red on them that they look more like a red than a gray!

Most of my grey's are caught in crop fields, in sets that are tight against cover. Here's a pic of a grey I caught last year. This location is typical of where my grey's are caught. The pic quality is poor, but you can see the type location I'm talking about. This guy was toe caught, and I was in a hurry to take the pic. This was a flat set with only bobcat urine as an attractant.

Any place you can catch red fox you can catch grey fox. Where I trap the grey Is the predomint fox, for every red I catch I take 10 greys. I trap bean stubble, cotton stubble. Any ditch crossing. ANY EDGE sometimes closer to cover Is good but I have caught them 100 yards out In a winter weat field. The main factor In catching any animal Is to trap where It's feeding or where It's traveling to these feeding areas.
The same sets and the same lure or bait will take both reds or greys.

I don't have many gray fox down here in SE-PA although I did catch my first this past winter...For you guys with a gray population, In all the pictures of doubles caught, I can't recall seeing any gray fox doubles...
Is the ratio of catching gray doubles signigificantly less than that of red fox?
Inquiring minds want to know...LOL

I catch lots of doubles on grey fox.
If you have a good population and you gang set you will catch doubles.

Hi Woodrow! Same as what mike 692 and Beav said. I've took a few greys down here. My best location is along a brushy fence row between to thick woods and snares in over grown feilds on coon trails. As far as sets I like a double dirt hole and a flat set with two differnt type of lures about 6 inches a part. Keep those little feet moveing around the trap pan and don't use too much pan tenion. Any other little secrets ;D I know I have them in the area along with Reds and Yotes. I guess I passed up some good spots last season but wont this season I had a hard time last season telling the fox tracks from the stupid cat tracks. so I didn't set the area since I was wanting to avoid cats. Hey Jonh, I might have to come and spend a week with ya and see if I can learn something from ya other then how to trap possums. ;D woody
