Fisher caught using XLDC, fish oil, and a chunk of beaver meat. Leaning pole predominantly, but next year every pole will be backed up by a "ground" set of some type. I don't like refusals. My only incentive to trap beaver now is to get fisher bait. LOL Our fisher season is messed up as it runs from 10/25-12/10, too early IMHO. Would love it to run into January, as the fur is awesome then.

A turkey wing feather with fish line duct taped to the end and hung in the set area spins with the slightest breeze........the movement fisher MUST check out. I have a number of times on fresh snow, seen where this pulled them down from pines they were traveling in. The feather works for you 24-7. IMHO getting them to the set is the biggest part of it.

Flagging tape did the same for my marten sets.
You're right about what you are saying. ------------------------------------------------------ 1- Location 2- Strong call lure 3- Eye appeal 4- Good bait 5- you have a fisher!
-------------------------------------------------------
ADK, nice pics. Many guys here prefer setting fisher boxes low on ground only ( less refusal ) and they catch more coon that way too... you were right, too many refusals up high.
Marten its different!

BK Picture: I set up a trail camera this year on a pole set to try to win your photo contest........the fisher hit the trap so fast the pic. didn't turn out, it was blured.

When there isn't any snow on the ground, I am partial to using a cotton ball nailed to the tree as a lure holder. Amazing how well that little white spot will stand out in the evergreens,. I will have to try the feather trick. I've also wondered if squeakers would work. Stick the squeaker near your sets or possibly in tha back of a cubby. Not sure if they'd be worth it as they are pricey.

Great pics, BK. Wish we could "hang" them here, but we have to get them to the ground. Like the angle and width of leaning pole; if they commit, you will catch them. I don't mind if they are steeper, either.

Funny thing about those pole sets;when I put a trap near the base,in addition to the coni, thers usually a Bobcat in it......learned my lesson putting 1 1/2's there.

Guys, how do you set you conibear on the leaning pole.
How big of a pole do you prefer and at what angle?
I am thinking about screwing a square bucket to the pole and setting it up like I would on the ground.
I usually set my pails on the ground but I have a couple of locations I am going to set up next winter that I am concerned about dogs.
For lure I like anything very "skunky". Right now i use a lure called Magnum Marten made by an outfit in Utah. The main reason I like it is because it is petroleum based, thus I dont get a drop of it on my gloves or clothes.
Bait. Pretty tough to beat beaver.

Thanks Stef,...some trappers have trouble getting fisher to climb the pole, this has never ben the case for me as I rub the pole with the bait and I refresh this rubbing every 3 days or so. I had to cheat a little and move the feather a little to get it and the fisher to show up in the pic. as we have a 25 ft rule here in wisc. on sight exposed bait. For the bait over the conibear I cover that with a chunk of cardboard held with 2 roofing nails, this also makes a good shelter for your lure. IMHO this set is over looked as a coon set as it's a killer for them too. It has a lot going for it as it's dog proof ,weather resistant, can be checked from a distance, the coon are dry, and it can be used year after year.

49,.........say a 4-8 in pole, I strike a blaze for the trap and use 4 roofing nails to hold it. Angle is not as important as some think,it can be steep, keep your bait close to the conibear and fisher won't try to go over your trap. If you push your triggers off to one side any small birds that may work your bait will land on the trap bars and leave your trigger alone.

4-8" pole is about right for me, too. I like it steep. 45* is a minimum. I use Barker's Coni-mounts to affix my 220's. 4 nails work as well. I position the bait as close to the trap as possible w/o it interefering with a firing trap. Bait is wired TIGHT to tree. Triggers in a /\ position on the most sensitive notch. I run an evergreen bow through each spring and over top of trap jaws to camoflauge from people and make sure the fisher isn't going to hop the trap.

petroleum based lure, you probably means Vaseline? Hate to use lure that thick in very cold weather. Less volatility capability (less calling power) Sure it last longer but in the Cold, most lures last and last but some can cut the wind Stef

.....learned my lesson putting 1 1/2's there. What do you now set at the base of the pole?

Sorry about the omission.......reg jaw #3's wrapped in wax paper if the temps are iffy, under sifted snow if steady and cold.

If its snowing like a bastard I use 4's.I put the trap where I "think"a cat will sit to ponder the set;no other lure or bait or attractors.

I like that idea, Edge. Bet you pick up a fisher now and then at the bottom of the pole.
